Addo Elephant National Park from the southern gate,
and enjoy this beautiful drive through the park. The Addo
Elephant National Park is a big 5 park, with an amazing group
of elephants, that have grown from only 9 elephants in 1931 to
the current population of over 450 Elephants. The park is the
most densely populated elephant habitation in the world. The
National Parks have taken great care, to repopulate the park
with animal species that are indigenous to the Eastern Cape
area.
Unlike other parks where culling must be carried out to
control populations, these gentle giants will be moved into
neighbouring areas, recently purchased by the government.
Go hike on the Alexandria Dune Fields, Or, go on a guided trip
to the sea, on 4 x 4 vehicles, and expect the unexpected. Now
up for National Heritage Nomination. 15 masters theses have
been done on the dunes, and this makes them the most studied
dune fields in the world. They are the longest, widest coastal
sand dunes in the southern hemisphere.
Experience the tidal, clean Sundays river. Safe to swim,
beautiful to canoe up river (18 km). Go on a boat cruise, with
a packed picnic.
Visit the local beach, where the river flows into Algoa Bay.
It is a place of peace, a place to soul search.
Birding: over 220 birds are recorded along this section, of
the Eastern Cape. Some endemic to this area.
Some of the Eastern Cape’s most well known game reserves are
within easy drive distance.
Port Elizabeth is a mere 25 minutes away, and if the bright
lights beckon, or you want to swim or sunbath on beaches with
Blue Flag Status, then this is the place to go.
